Get Stronger By Using Lighter Weights

0
Weights

By Kennedy Shelley

People start losing their freedom as they get older because they lose muscle mass.  Losing muscle strength is a killer.

So how do you fight back?

Using variable weight training will give you the most benefit with the smallest risk of injury according to new research.

Most of the muscle magazines are always pushing “no pain, no gain” or “go heavy or go home” but this latest research shows that if you really want to get stronger, paying attention to your body by rotating heavy and light weights will make you stronger quicker.

And even if you are not someone who considers themselves an athlete, you will want to read this.

The Center for Disease Control recommends strength training at least two times a week.

That can be pushups and other bodyweight calisthenics, or it can be weight training.  But either way, it is vital to long term good health.

The more traditional method of weight training is to figure out what the maximum amount of weight you can lift and then lift a percentage of that weight.

And you do this day in and day out without fail.

The downside of this type of training is that it doesn’t take into account how you are feeling right now.

Did you have a good night’s sleep, eat right or are you under a great deal of stress?  All of these can affect your strength on any given day.

If you go strictly on what your percentage of maximum weight is you might end up injuring yourself, maybe not with an acute injury but even by overtraining and not recovering enough.

So, is there a way to figure out how to vary the amount you are lifting to prevent injury?  And if you are preventing possible injury are you slowing down your progress?

The answer is thankfully yes to the first and no to the second.

By varying your weight, you will lift less weight, but end up getting stronger.

All the study participants were males who have been doing weight training for up to two years.  The researchers broke them into two groups.

One did the standard percentage of maximum training.

The other group varied their weights each time depending on how well they were able to do their first set of lifts.

If they couldn’t do the first set successfully, the weight was lowered until they could do it right.

The result after six weeks was the variable group lifted less weight than the conventional maximum group, but they ended up getting stronger.

So, this really does point out that you don’t really have to push yourself when you got a bad night’s sleep.

You really need to pay attention to your form and performance and realize that somedays you can do more than others.

And when you do this you protect yourself from injury, and you get stronger.

While this may seem like radical common sense, the study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research is the first time that researchers have shown that strength gains can occur when you don’t just follow the percentages of your maximum and push yourself into an overtraining injury.

Four Billion People Finally Have a Treatment

0
NAFLD

By Kennedy Shelley

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) affects over four billion people on the planet, and until now there was really no treatment option that was proven to work.

And it doesn’t just affect obese or fat people.  You can be TOFI (Thin Outside, Fat Inside).

You can have a great deal of fat inside your abdomen and have all the health problems associated with obesity even though the weight chart says you are healthy.

There is no drug that will cure this problem.

And NAFLD is a serious problem.  Once you have it, your risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke and kidney problems go up astronomically.

According to the Center for Disease Control, 30% of Americans are prediabetic, and 90% of them don’t know it.

And this may be a low number, UCLA just released a study showing that 55% of Californians have prediabetes.  And it starts with NAFLD.

You may not have heard of this problem because there isn’t a drug that cures it.  Just like many of you have never heard of restless leg syndrome until someone created a drug to treat it.

A team at the University of Alabama Medical School found 23 adolescents (9-17) with NAFLD and put half on a low-fat diet and the other on a carb-restricted diet.

Neither group drank drinks with sugar, neither ate processed food.

The amount of fat in their liver was measured using an MRI, which is considered the “gold standard” for looking inside the body.

They didn’t restrict the calories the kids ate, and the families were provided with the groceries they needed to start the study.

After just two months the group eating fewer carbohydrates had significantly less fat in their liver.  Not only that, but they lost fat everywhere.

There was absolutely no change in the low-fat diet.

This is a major breakthrough in research and vindication of what the low-carb/Keto community has been saying for years, if you want to end type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and all the problems associated with metabolic syndrome, then cut out the added carbs and sugar.

If you don’t know much about metabolic syndrome and the problems associated with it, see this article in Freedom Health News.

This is great news because America will spend $350 BILLION on type 2 diabetes this year, and yet there has not been a proven way to stop the very first sign that it is starting, which is the liver is getting clogged with fat from too much insulin.

Insulin is primarily a fat-storage hormone.  When you eat carbs and sugar your blood glucose level rises, which causes your pancreas to dump insulin into your blood to lower your blood sugar.

Protein will cause a modest increase in insulin, and fat doesn’t increase it at all.

The result?  Low carb diets end type 2 diabetes.  See this article in Freedom Health News.

And now we found that we can reverse fatty liver by simply lowering the carbs and increasing fat from meat.

That will give you all the energy you need, keep you full and your metabolic system healthy.

For the last 30 years, we have been seeing the cases of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes skyrocket but there has been a theory that meat fat causes heart disease.

This thinking is slowly starting to change.

More and more serious researchers are realizing the real problem is inflammation caused by insulin and dietary fat doesn’t cause heart disease, so expect more research like this to be coming out in the next few years.

Until then, consider going low carb.

Is A Heart Attack A Clogged Pipe Or A Popped Pimple?

0
Heart Attack

By Kennedy Shelley

The British Medical Journal (BMJ), the respected journal of the British Medical Society is picking at 50 years of “settled science.”

The BMJ has been a brave voice in the wilderness in attacking conventional nutrition advice, the war against cholesterol and how we look at heart health.

In 2015 it ran an article attacking government food recommendations because it was based on politics, and not science.

The article written by journalist Nina Teicholz savaged the recommendations lack of scientific data for the basis of the recommendations.

The professional dietetic association went on the warpath.

The group “Science in the Public Interest” (which is mostly composed of liberal arts professors and trial lawyers) demanded a retraction of the article, but the BMJ refused to cave to the mob pressure.

The BMJ instead put together an independent group of reviewers to look at the charges raised by Science in the Public Interest and said they had no scientific grounds for their critique.

That is very rare for a major medical publication which is very dependent on funding from the major food manufacturers as well as Big Pharma.

Now they are taking on traditional wisdom and Big Pharma by supporting fat in the diet.

The central point of their editorial position is you can’t clog your arteries by eating fat.

This is almost medical heresy.

They point out that the real danger is inflammation in the arteries which can lead to plaques in the artery wall.  These plaques resemble pimples.

The plaques are not a danger unless they rupture which is akin to a pimple popping.

This results in coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction that will kill you within minutes.

The current way of dealing with these plaques is to treat them like a plumbing problem. Doctors think of them like a clog that needs to be broken.

The result has been the wholesale use of stents in people who have not had a heart attack.

Stents are proven to be a life saving treatment to open arteries to the heart following a heart attack, but the BMJ published a study which showed definitively that these devices provide no benefit and do nothing for patient health if used before a heart attack.

Stopping unnecessary stenting would save about a half a billion dollars a year in medical costs.  But that is money that surgeons, hospitals and the devise manufacturers would like to have.

(To learn more about the problem with stents, see this article in Freedom Health News)

Now the BMJ is coming out against low-fat diets, and the voices of medical orthodoxy are going nuts.

What is at stake is literally over a trillion dollars to Big Pharma because if cholesterol isn’t the problem, you don’t need a statin drug.

Statin drugs do one thing, it chemically lowers cholesterol, specifically the so-called bad cholesterol.

Statins have been traditionally the biggest selling drugs on the planet and have resulted in over a trillion dollars in profit for Big Pharma.  (See this article for more information)

But the BMJ is saying that the problems with cholesterol are a big fat lie.  In fact, cholesterol has nothing to do with heart health, but the problem really is inflammation caused by insulin and dietary sugar.

It is rare for a major medical journal to stand up and announce that the “Emperor isn’t wearing clothes” but the BMJ has the science squarely on their side.  Let’s hope others are listening.

Does Your Cholesterol Affect Your Sex Life?

0
Cholesterol

By Kennedy Shelley

ED (erectile dysfunction) affects 30 million men, which means nearly 10% of all couples experience this frustration.

The causes of ED can be many fold.  From direct injury and trauma to stress and psychological reasons can be the root cause of the problem.

But scientists are now hypothesizing that there may be a link to high cholesterol.  But does the real data show that is the problem, or is it metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is actually one of the greatest killers on the planet because it leads to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the American Heart Association, here are the biggest risk factors of having metabolic syndrome:

Waist Size – Over 40” for men, and 35” for women

High Triglycerides – 150 mg per ML

High Blood Pressure – blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or greater

High Blood Sugar – 100 mg/dL or higher fasted

Low “Good Cholesterol” (HDL) (Less than 40 mg/DL)

Three or more of these puts you at very high risk.

This is going to affect the health of your arteries and blood vessels, and if they are damaged that can lead to ED.

As a matter of fact, most men find out they have metabolic syndrome and are at risk of a heart attack because they suddenly develop ED.

It looks like the cholesterol ED correlation is not the one you want to pay attention to.

Instead, looking at the bigger picture, you should use ED as a barometer of your overall metabolic health.

The veins and arteries to the male member are very small and need to be highly elastic in order to function properly.  These may be one of the first parts of your body damaged by the chronic inflammation of metabolic syndrome.

When you look at all the possible causes of ED, you see:

obesity, high blood pressure medicines, depression, and other issues that relate directly back to metabolic syndrome, not high cholesterol.

The blockbuster ED drug Viagra was actually discovered when it was being studied as a heart medicine.

The hope was it would increase the amount of nitric oxide to the heart.  It turns out that it does it to other parts of the body and gives many men the boost they need.

But Viagra only affects the symptoms of damage to the arteries, it doesn’t actually treat the root cause which is metabolic syndrome.

The popular press is pushing the idea that high bad cholesterol causes:

diabetes, heart disease, blood vessel disease, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure or Peyronie’s disease, but this ignores the fact that people with normal or low cholesterol are just as likely to have these conditions.

Some articles on the subject push statin drugs to reduce cholesterol, but statins are known to lower testosterone and libido which is why most doctors do not prescribe statins to treat ED.

Scientists like to say, “Correlation does not mean causation.”  In this case just because some men with ED have high cholesterol they must be linked.  But that ignores men with low cholesterol and still have ED.

If you want to actually solve the ED problem, take a look at this article in Freedom Health News and see if solving the root problem takes care of your ED symptoms.

Alternative or Traditional Cancer Treatment, Which Is Better?

0
Cancer Treatment

By Kennedy Shelley

Rush Limbaugh recently announced he has stage 4 lung cancer.

While this is shocking news to him, millions of Americans each year learn they are also facing a battle with cancer.

When people are in the fight of their lives, they often start grasping at straws and buying any possible treatment based strictly on internet testimonials which is not a good way to make health care decisions.

But when you look at the track record of conventional medicine when it comes to the treatment of certain cancers you can’t say unequivocally they are always better than the alternatives.

A treatment of cancer is considered successful if the patient lives five years from the diagnosis, not if they lived to an expected life span.

This also does not take into account any diminishment in the quality of life that is lost due to the treatment.

So, what is the best thing for someone like Rush Limbaugh to do?

This is a difficult question to answer because many patients may pursue alternative treatments without telling their doctor because they are afraid the doctor will tell them they can’t do it.

And the answer also is complicated because different cancers progress at different rates.

A man with prostate cancer is more likely to die of a heart attack than the cancer because it grows so slowly.

Some cancers can kill quickly and need to be treated aggressively.

What Yale found in their 2017 study was those who just went the alternative medicine route and ignored all the conventional doctors died the quickest.

The study looked at 840 patients who had either breast, prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.

280 people chose to go 100% alternative medicine and the rest used conventional treatments.

Ignoring conventional medicine was the quickest way to die.

By far, these people had the worst outcomes.

The next worst group are those who only did what their doctor told them to do.

They didn’t question the doctor, didn’t try making lifestyle changes and they fared better than those who ignored conventional medicine.

But the group that had the highest survival rate were the ones the doctors hated the most.

They treated the doctors not as infallible beings, but as consultants.

They asked questions, made sensible use of alternative therapies including diet and lifestyle to augment conventional medicine.

Now, these were the slow-growing cancers.  The patients had time to consider alternatives and didn’t rush into making a decision but instead thoughtfully considered alternatives.

In other words, what the Yale researchers showed was thoughtful patients who did their own research and sought out alternatives to the “one size fits all” style of medicine practiced by many doctors had the longest lives and had the highest rate of recovery.

That may be the answer to most medical issues, use doctors as valued resources, but don’t rely on them exclusively, always taking responsibility for your own health and look for good evidence to challenge their advice when you see better alternatives.

This is your best chance for survival.

Here Is Your Fix For An Ingrown Nail

0
Ingrown Nail

By Kennedy Shelley

Until you have experienced the pain of an ingrown toe or fingernail you may not know why this article is so important.

It’s like the old saying “this sticks out like a sore thumb.”  You just don’t realize how important your fingers, toes or thumb is until it starts hurting.

An ingrown toe or fingernail is where the edges of your nail grows back into the skin around it.  Nails grow at a rate of .14 inches per month.  Normally the edge doesn’t go back into the skin, but when it does, it is painful.

There is a temptation to want to remove the nail completely when this happens, but keep in mind it can take a year to 18 months to regrow a nail completely.  Thankfully there are less evasive ways to take care of the problem.

Who gets ingrown nails?  With the toes, it’s usually teens and others who have sweaty feet.  People with sweaty palms are at higher risk for fingernail problems.

These are more likely to occur with the thumb and big toe.

When you cut the nail incorrectly, leaving anything less than a straight line can give the nail a path to enter your skin.  Or in the case of ingrown toenails, wearing tight shoes can cause a problem.

But if you are reading this article you probably don’t want to read about how to prevent them, you want relief now.

The first thing you want to determine is how much damage has occurred.  If there is pus or signs of infection then you need to seek medical care, home remedies won’t stop the infection, and if it gets worse or gangrene sets in, then there is the risk of amputation.

But if it’s just sore and red, you might be able to take care of it with some time-tested home remedies.

The most time tested remedy is simply soaking your finger or toe in warm water for 20 minutes a few times a day and keeping the area dry the rest of the time.

Try pulling the skin away from the nail after you moisturize the area with coconut or olive oil.

Use over the counter pain meds for the inflammation and pain such as Motrin or Tylenol.

Use Neosporin to stop any topical infection.

You can do this at home for a few days or a couple of weeks, hopefully if you start at the first sign of trouble, you can get this taken care of quickly.

But if this doesn’t work, then you may have no choice but to go to the doctor.  Taking care of an ingrown nail is usually a minor in-office surgery, but it certainly is better than risking a serious infection which could result in an amputation.

Most of the time a doctor will do a partial nail removal, which can be painful, but it does tend to heal.

If you wait too long, and the nail thickens, the doctor may have to do a total nail removal, and that can be painful for months.

The best thing to do is to pay attention to keeping your nails cut which is what your mom told you to do anyway.

My Glands Are Swollen, Now What?

0
Lymph Glands

By Kennedy Shelley

Why are your glands swollen?  Is it an infection?  Is it something worse?

The lymph glands are part of your body’s immune system.  They collect and remove an infection from the body.

They often swell as a result of infection, especially in the throat.  This is why often the first sign of a cold is a sore throat.

There are many types of infections that can cause a sore throat and your lymph glands to swell.

There are two types of infections, bacterial and viral.  Bacterial infections you can treat with antibiotics if it is serious enough, but while there are some antiviral drugs, they are usually used in the most life-threatening situations.

If your sore throat is really painful, it may be a strep infection.

This is when the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes infect the mucous membranes of the throat, and then the body tries to fight it off trying to get the bacteria out of your throat.  That’s what causes all the swelling and pain.

About 20-30% of all sore throats are due to strep according to the Center for Disease Control.

A strep infection is usually suspected when there is pus in the throat and there is also fever.  This may go away on its own or require antibiotics.

It does need to be monitored, I tried to ignore this once and ended up in the Emergency Room and nearly had to have a breathing tube put in because the infection almost cut off my windpipe.

The most common cause of a sore throat and swollen glands is what is referred to as the common cold.

This is a relatively minor viral infection that causes an inflammatory response in the lymph system as the body fights off the infection.

An Epstein-Barr virus can cause mononucleosis which will result in seriously swollen glands and a persistent sore throat.

It typically develops over 4-6 weeks and can leave you in a weakened condition for months.

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done for this infection except rest.

The best defense against all of these infections is a strong immune system.  Getting rest and a good night’s sleep is the number one thing you can do.

There is a myriad of possible home remedies.  Chicken soup remains a favorite because the warm liquid does help the lymph fluids move.

Stimulants like coffee are usually avoided because the goal is to rest the body so it does not try to force it to take action.

Some people swear by fasting during a cold in order to increase the body’s natural immune response and there is a growing body of evidence that because fasting increases autophagy, this may be the best action.

Autophagy is where the body’s cells eat the weak and damaged cells.  It increases the release of the human growth hormone and in the long run, makes you stronger.

To learn more about the power of fasting see this article in Freedom Health News.

You Quit Smoking: Will Your Lungs Heal?

0
Smoking

By Kennedy Shelley

Here is some new motivation to help you keep your New Year’s resolution to stop smoking…you will effectively get new lungs.

There are over 60 carcinogenic ingredients found in cigarette smoke.  There is a very strong link that shows smokers have much higher rates of lung cancer than non-smokers.

But in a recent study released in the prestigious journal Nature, we can now see how the lungs almost magically heal themselves when you stop smoking.

The study showed that cells not damaged by smoking start to grow and mutate to heal the bronchial tubes much more quickly than anyone ever knew.

The quicker you stop smoking, the more undamaged cells there are, and they go to work quickly repairing the damaged cells.

For years the conventional wisdom was that the damage from smoking was permanent and irreversible, but this new research shows that the body is a remarkable healing machine when you let it.

This is great news even for people who smoked a pack a day for 40 years.

The myriad poisons in cigarette smoke slowly damage the DNA in the lung cells, creating the mutations that lead to lung cancer.

The study also showed just how much damage smoking does to the lungs.  As these toxins hit the lungs, tens of thousands of genetic mutations start to take place.

One of the researchers was quoted as saying:

“These can be thought of as mini time bombs, waiting for the next hit that causes them to progress to cancer,” said Dr Kate Gowers, one of the researchers at UCL.”

But a small proportion of cells remain unharmed.  And these are the key to lung healing.

When you quit, 40% of your cells in your lungs look like you never smoked.  This 40% goes to work to take over the damaged cells.

FROM BBC NEWS

“We were totally unprepared for the finding,” Dr Peter Campbell, from the Sanger Institute, told BBC News.

He added: “There is a population of cells that, kind of, magically replenish the lining of the airways.

“One of the remarkable things was patients who had quit, even after 40 years of smoking, had regeneration of cells that were totally unscathed by the exposure to tobacco.”

Nearly 3/4 of lung cancers are found in smokers, some of whom thought they were doomed because they smoked and there was no benefit to quitting, but this study shows quite the opposite, there is a great reason to quit and quit now.

Lung cancer is a horrible way to die.  The last days are spent gasping for breath and the entire body is often wracked with pain.

But this latest report in the January 29th issue of Nature shows there is hope to avoid it if you quit smoking now and let the body heal itself.

Researchers are still trying to access all the positive changes that come from quitting smoking, but we know that just because you smoked and we used to think the changes were permanent, the newest research says that isn’t so, and you can heal even if you smoked for years.

Will Being a Vegan Make You Stupid?

0
Vegan

By Kennedy Shelley

If our ancient ancestors had to choose between a salad and a steak, they would choose the steak.

The result was their brains grew.

Our brains are expensive.  This little bit of our body (less than 2% of our total body weight) consumes 20-25% of your daily calories.  And it gets fed first.

It wants the best amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and energy.

At the latest count, there are 375 million vegetarians on the planet, and they are turning their backs on millions of years of evolutionary intelligence that made homo sapiens the smartest animals on the planet.

This trend is growing at a rate of 600% in the West despite headlines warning people that the inherent nutritional deficiencies of the vegan diet can lead to health problems including stunting intelligence.

The German Society for Nutrition warned back in 2016 that the growing vegan movement was causing serious health problems and should be avoided altogether by children and pregnant women.

Belgium went so far as to make it illegal to give your kids a vegan diet. (Have a carrot go to jail?)

But as the research shows, veganism is dangerous to kids and adolescents and this was confirmed in a 2018 report in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition which did a systematic review of all the data to date.

There has only been one double blind study to see if meat makes you smarter.

This was done in Kenya, with kids getting meat in their daily soup.  They quickly outperformed their vegan counterparts in school.

This makes sense because there are certain nutrients that can only come from animal sources:  Creatine, carnosine, taurine, EPA and DHA omega-3, and some that might be chemically created including B-12 and D3.

You have to eat copious quantities of B6 rich vegetables in order to avoid being deficient.

These nutrients are vital to having a healthy brain (and body).  Yet most vegans are chronically deficient.

This is not only important in the developmental years, but also in later life.  If you are deficient in B12 as you age, your IQ will be significantly lower than your peers.

Contrary to the Popeye cartoon, you won’t get iron from spinach.  The best source remains meat, especially liver and organ meats.  And a lack of iron is directly related to lower intelligence.

This is especially hard on young women who are more likely to be vegans.

Unfortunately for them, the type of iron most easily absorbed by the body only comes from animal sources.

Being a vegan involves taking many risks with your health.  It is basically untested experimentation and goes against all the evolutionary evidence.

Vegans often have a host of “unexplained” health problems and problems concentrating.  Most of which is corrected after adding some meat and eggs back to their diet.

Freedom Health News has discussed how a low carb diet can eradicate many mental health issues but more research is needed to see what exactly the negative effects of veganism are on IQ.

3 Surprising Reasons You Might Be Feeling Nauseous

0
Nauseous

By: Annie Morgan

Perhaps you’ve noticed lately your stomach feels like you just got off a spinning ride.

But nothing has changed in your diet and you’re not pregnant, however, you just can’t seem to figure out why you feel so sick lately.

As it turns out, there are many health problems that can cause your body to become nauseous.

And the good news is, identifying what is causing your nausea can help you fight back against it!

Here are 3 common reasons you could be feeling nauseous.

Anxiety

Many people who struggle with anxiety, or have yet to admit they have anxiety don’t realize just how much mental struggles can affect the physical body.

From insomnia from sleeping too much, heartburn problems to headaches, and yes, even nausea.

When you are anxious, your nerves fire and send all sorts of signals, but they get out of alignment and become distorted.

As a result, your stomach gets confused and begins to contract, which messes with your normal rhythm.

Self-reported:

“Your gut is lined with nerves that work to expand and contract to push food through your digestive tract. But when you’re stressed or anxious, your brain sends signals to those nerves that cause additional contractions. All those contractions mess up your gut’s normal rhythm, which can leave you feeling nauseous. And you don’t have to be majorly upset to feel the effects. Even minor stress can leave you feeling nauseous, Dr. Wexler says.”

In this moment, try doing some breathing exercises to relax your body.

Or, drink a cold cup of water and lay down if you can.

You might find after relaxing and resting for a few moments the nausea will disappear.

Migraine?

A migraine headache is one of the most excruciating pains a person can feel.

Besides a throbbing head, people who suffer from migraines can feel dizzy, become sensitive to loud noises and light, and yep, you guessed it, feel nauseous.

The best way to treat a migraine is prevention, so make sure you keep your body hydrated and sleep with a good pillow.

And if you feel it start to come on, take an over the counter pain med like Excedrin (if your doctor approves) to help stop a full-blown migraine.

If you’ve never suffered from migraines before, pay attention to your symptoms with your nauseous feeling.

You might think the issue is in your stomach, but it could all stem from a migraine headache.

If you do have a full-blown migraine, lay down in a quiet room with ice on your neck and head until it passes.

You Could Just Be Hungry

If you’ve drank several cups of coffee on an empty stomach, or taken vitamins or other supplements without food, your stomach might be rebelling.

Or perhaps, you’re just hungry.

Depending on how your body regulates blood sugar, if your blood sugar is low you might feel dizzy or nauseous.

No, this doesn’t mean eat candy.

But even a banana or glass of orange juice might do the trick.

And it’s important to read the instructions if you are taking natural supplements.

Just because something is natural, doesn’t mean it isn’t potent!

If you take a strong herb on an empty stomach – it can definitely make you nauseous.

So next time you’re feeling nauseous, run through this quick checklist to see if one of these reasons is the real cause.

Be sure to share this article with your friends and family to let them know 3 surprising reasons they might be feeling nauseous!

These Nighttime Routines Will Make You Thrive In The Early Morning

0
Morning

By: Annie Morgan

Perhaps you seem to struggle to get out of bed each morning.

Or maybe you just really are not a morning person, and getting up early is extra difficult for you.

Health experts agree your morning routine actually starts the night before.

And with a little preparation in the evening, you can have a successful morning if you practice these healthy nighttime routines.

Be Careful What You Put In Your Body

Binging on a bowl of ice cream or bag of chips before bed might seem like a harmless way to unwind, but it will make sleep that much more difficult.

Your digestive system needs time to rest, and if you eat junk food (or really even any food before bed), your system will be working, while you’re trying to sleep.

The same goes for late-night snacking.

If you have the habit of getting up in the middle of the night to snack, your blood sugar could elevate forcing your body to crash in the morning.

Instead, opt for a cup of herbal tea before bed for a soothing and calming drink to help you sleep.

Also, don’t forget to put a bottle of water by your bedside so you can grab it first thing in the morning and get hydrated!

If you work a high-stress job you might crawl into bed with massive knots on your shoulders and a stiff neck or headache.

It’s critical to take time in the evening to unwind your body.

Take an Epsom salt bath with lavender oil.

Spend 15 minutes stretching out your body, or using a tennis ball or foam roller to work out any knots or kinks.

Maybe even see if someone you live with can give you a quick shoulder rub – if not, invest in a hand-held massager (with heat) and melt away the tension before bed.

Don’t Neglect Your Mental Health

While it’s critical to prepare the body for a peaceful night of sleep, the mind is just as important.

After a long day, take the time before bed to let it all go, by listening to a guided meditation or practicing breathing exercises.

In addition, taking the time to write down what you’re grateful for will help you develop a heart of gratitude.

So instead of going to bed angry at the thought, you have to get up at 5 am, you can end your night writing down what you are grateful for that day.

Even something small like being thankful for your weighted blanket or comfy slippers gets your mind in the habit to start appreciating what you have.

So if mornings are difficult for you, rest assured you can set yourself up for success the night before.

It doesn’t mean you’ll become a morning person, but you’re sure to have an easier start!

Be sure to share this article with your friends and family to let them know nighttime routines that will make them thrive in the morning!

3 Ways You Are Sabotaging Your Weight Loss Goals

0
Weight Loss

By: Annie Morgan

With the new year rolling in, if you’re like many folks you have weight loss goals you hope to knock out of the park.

But what often happens is your plan to get fit falls flat, as you unknowingly sabotage your weight loss goals before you even start.

The good news is, if you can identify these behaviors ahead of time, you can set yourself up to avoid these common weight loss pitfalls.

Here are a few ways you might be sabotaging your own health – and here are a few tips to help you get back on track.

You Are A Midnight Snacker

Maybe you maintain good eating habits all day, but can’t seem to break away from the fridge during the middle of the night.

From carb binges to sugar-filled treats – chances are you are barely awake as you pound back these treats in the middle of the night.

Not only are you eating more than you probably realize, but you aren’t giving your digestive system a break.

By constantly eating, your body is forced to work to digest the food.

Instead, commit to a plan like intermittent fasting, and give up eating after 8 pm at the absolute latest.

If you wake up hungry – you might just be dehydrated and a glass of water should do the trick.

When your body is hungry – fill it with what it actually needs – and it’s not a late-night trip to the fridge.

You Self-Sabotage

One of the ways to hurt your weight loss goals is to set unrealistic expectations like “I’m going to lose 30lbs in the next month” or “I’m going to work out 2 hours every day” (especially when you barely work out now).

Start off slow.

If you aren’t used to going to the gym – commit to 2 times per week for 30 minutes each day, then slowly build up your endurance.

And don’t set drastic weight loss goals that aren’t achievable.

Not only will you become discouraged, but the lack of progress is actually debilitating.

You Turn To Fads

Marketers have a field day appealing to people’s desire to be thin.

They promise the “latest and greatest” toy to help you lose weight.

From wrapping your body in saran wrap, to paying up to thousands of dollars for weight loss pills, people are going broke trying to get thin.

Instead of just eating healthy and working out, people are fasting on liquid only diets, and even buying machines promising to help you “get thin from the couch” by “massaging your muscles.”

But there are no secrets or quick fixes to true health.

It is a result of daily decisions and eating habits you live out.

So if you have a goal to lose weight this year – take it one day at a time.

Give up sugar and carbs, and do not eat processed foods.

And don’t forget to maintain an active lifestyle!

When it comes to weight loss done the right way, slow and steady always has the best chance of lasting success.

Do you have a plan to lose weight this year?

Which of these sabotaging behaviors do you struggle with the most?

Avoid These Winter Health Hazards With A Little Preparation

0
Winter

By: Annie Morgan

Winter is here and with its cold frigid months many people are at risk for falling prey to common health hazards.

From chapped skin and lips to frostbite, depression and weight gain, the winter months can be tough for many.

The good news is, you can learn how to prepare yourself to withstand the bitter cold without sacrificing your health.

Chapped, Dry, Or Damaged Skin

Many people don’t take the cold months seriously and walk out of the house with their hands and face unprotected.

And before they know it, their hands are chapped and bleeding, and their skin is dry and aching.

While it’s always good to moisturize your skin directly out of the shower, during the winter months you might want to switch to a heavier moisturizer.

There are many natural body creams on the market that contain only natural products and essential oils.

Other natural products like coconut or jojoba oil do wonders too.

Stay away from toxic products like Vaseline.

And when preparing for the cold, don’t forget to protect your lips!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

With dark skies and cold winter nights, many people find themselves depressed in the winter.

The short days and lack of sunlight are difficult for many people, and those with SAD find themselves without energy and seeking to isolate themselves from others.

Treatments include everything from exercise to light therapy.

The Cleveland Clinic reported:

“For some people, winter’s grayness, lack of sun and short days wear on the psyche. “It’s the time of year people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) find most challenging,” says psychologist Scott Bea, PsyD.

In SAD, depression surfaces in late fall or early winter, fading by spring or early summer.

Treatment involves purchasing a light that emits 10,000 lux. Thirty 30 minutes of light exposure per day — ideally in the morning — are enough to lift mood. “Light therapy is effective for about 70 percent of those who use it as prescribed,” says Dr. Bea.”

If you suffer with SAD, it’s critical to find physical activity you can do in the winter, such as indoor swimming or spinning.

Or if you prefer outdoor activities like skiing and snowboarding – take advantage of the season.

And while you may be tempted to isolate, make sure to make time to spend with your network, as isolation leads to further depression.

As a preventive measure, make a list of hobbies you’d like to do this winter. It could include everything from roller-skating to checking out an art museum.

Don’t let the cold keep you in hibernation!

Weight Gain

After surviving the holiday season and facing cold temperatures, many people realize they’ve packed on 10 even 15 lbs during winter.

Comfort foods like chips and sugary drinks may seem harmless, but they add up – and pack on the pounds.

Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean you have to gain weight.

Make sure to maintain your healthy eating habits – and consider starting the keto plan, which allows you to eat protein and hearty foods like chaffles.

And be sure to keep up your exercise routine!

Which of these winter health hazards do you think is the greatest risk to you?

What are some other dangers that occur in the winter?

A massive large-scale study was done analyzing 2 groups of people – half of them drank green tea 3 or more times a week, and half of them didn’t.

The results of the study were shocking and revealed those who drank green tea 3 more times a week had a 56 percent lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke.

Healthline reported:

“Habitual tea drinkers were found to be 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease and stroke, 22 percent less likely to die from heart disease and stroke, and 15 percent less likely to die of other causes.

A subset of slightly more than 14,000 people was also assessed in a follow-up study.

Those who kept their tea-drinking habit in both studies saw more pronounced benefits, including a 56 percent lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke.”

More research needs to be done, but this is great news for those who have been long-time advocates for this health beverage.

What’s So Healthy About Green Tea?

One word – polyphenols.

These antioxidants are loaded with health benefits and protect the body against free radicals.

Polyphenols are found in many foods – from dark berries to certain spices like ginger, cumin, and cinnamon.

And you guessed it — green tea.

The health benefits of polyphenols are many.

Healthline reported:

Dr. Guy L. Mintz, director of cardiovascular health and lipidology at Northwell Health’s Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in New York, told Healthline that polyphenols are known to have cardiovascular benefits.

“These benefits include improvement in function of the blood vessels, more dilating and less constriction,” he said. “These compounds can also increase good cholesterol, which is also cardiac protective. These compounds also have a reduction in inflammation and makes our platelets, clotting factor, less sticky.”

Some health experts even believe they can help prevent diabetes 2, due to their ability to boost insulin sensitivity.

But polyphenols aren’t the only healthy ingredient in green tea, catechins are antioxidants found in green tea which are said to help prevent damage to your cells.

Consider starting your day off with a cup of green tea in the morning or after lunch.

Try and avoid drinking it before bed, as the caffeine can keep you up at night.

Here Are The Main Differences Between Having A Cold Vs. The Flu

0
Cold vs Flu

By: Annie Morgan

It’s that time of year again where drugstores and doctors’ offices are pushing everyone to get the flu shot.

But with so many scare tactics surrounding the flu – many people don’t know what the difference between the flu and the common cold are.

While there are some similarities in their symptoms, there are noticeable differences too.

So if you’re wondering how to tell if you’ve got a cold or the flu – here are the key things you need to look for.

Symptoms Of A Cold

Here’s the thing with the cold – you can only manage symptoms.

Since it is a virus, taking things like antibiotics won’t work – the key is to rest and keep your immune system as strong as possible.

People with a cold often experience common symptoms like a runny nose or congestion.

Sneezing and an overall feeling of simply “not feeling good” are common.

While fever and body aches are common, they aren’t as heightened as one who has the flu.

Colds usually last up to 10 days – but it’s more common for most symptoms to go away within 3 to 4 days.

And many people often don’t take any medicine for the cold – they simply choose to drink bottomless cups of green tea and other healthy hot broths like bone broth.

Other immune boosters like Vitamin C and zinc are good too.

Symptoms Of The Flu

Those who have the flu often face more severe symptoms than a common cold.

One of the key symptoms is a fever – we’re talking over 100 degrees.

But even though you have a fever, you might experience chills and feel cold – and find yourself curled up under blankets.

The flu also causes your body to ache – everywhere from your back to your limbs. You’ll feel awful and might not even feel like moving at all.

A nasty cough which can cause respiratory problems is another common symptom of the flu.

Medical experts say it takes about a week for the flu to make its way through your body – and during the initial onset and up to 7 days after – you are contagious so stay home!

Going to work or school to “tough it out” and getting everyone else around you sick is not a good plan.

Not to mention your body needs rest to recover.

Ways To Boost Your Immune System

Ideally, your immune system would be so strong you’d be able to withstand catching a cold or the flu.

But even those with strong immune systems can still get sick.

Make sure you take a good dose of Vitamin C, and other immune boosters like Echinacea, which can help fight infection by increasing the number of white blood cells.

Exercise is a natural immune booster (and it’s free) – and don’t forget to get enough sleep!

Your body needs to remain strong and rejuvenate, and if you are sleep deprived you are more likely to get sick.

So before you jump and get the flu shot, make sure you focus on prevention – a strong immune system really is the key.

Were you aware of the difference between the cold and the flu?

What are your thoughts on getting the flu shot?

Drinking Caffeine Could Stop The Pounds From Piling On

`Caffeine

By: Annie Morgan

Many people drink their coveted cups of coffee at the beginning of the day to get an energy boost, but as it turns out there could be a new health benefit.

Mate tea and other caffeine products are known for their health benefits – and many health-conscious folks sip herbal tea throughout the day.

And as a bonus – some studies on lab rats now reveal drinking caffeine could actually stop you from gaining weight!

Caffeine Consumption And Weight Gain

A month-long study was conducted testing different types of caffeine on rats – vs. decaffeinated extracts.

The rats were fed a diet high in sugar and tested to see if drinking caffeine helped combat the effects of their poor diet.

As it turns out, the rats that consumed caffeine ended up seeing a noticeable result contrasted with those who did not.

Medical News Today reported:

“The team fed six groups of rats a high-fat, high-sugar diet for 28 days. In addition, they supplemented the diet of five of the groups with one of the following: synthetic caffeine, mate tea containing caffeine, caffeine extracted from mate tea, caffeine extracted from coffee, and decaffeinated mate tea.

The amount of caffeine was equivalent to the amount that humans ingest from drinking 4 cups of coffee per day.

After 28 days, there was a marked difference in lean body mass among the six groups of rats.

The rats that had consumed caffeine from any source had gained less body fat than their counterparts in the noncaffeine group.”

With so many medical professionals telling people to stop drinking coffee – these results show drinking caffeine does have health benefits!

In addition, this reveals yet another reason why drinking decaf coffee is pointless!

Additional Research

Many people gain weight due to lipid buildup in fat cells.

Researchers were curious to see if drinking caffeine would affect this as well – and the results showed it did.

The study showed drinking caffeine decreased lipid buildup in a “massive way” and was effective regardless the method of caffeine.

Medical News Today reported:

“These tests revealed that lipid buildup in fat cells decreased by 20–41%, regardless of the type of caffeine.

Examination of genes relevant to lipid metabolism and obesity also revealed that caffeine reduced the expression of certain genes.”

If you are drinking coffee on the keto plan – consider bulletproof coffee – loaded with even more healthy ingredients like coconut or MCT oil.

Not The Ultimate Solution To Obesity

Of course, this is not suggesting a person should eat a diet full of sugar and carbs and think drinking coffee will maintain their health.

The key to avoiding obesity is to eat a diet full of healthy greens and protein – and make sure to get enough exercise.

However, despite some in the medical community trying to villainize caffeine, this latest study shows caffeine can actually be an added bonus in helping one to lose weight.

As an added bonus, add daily coffee consumption to your intermittent fasting plan – and you’re bound to see an even greater effect!

Were you surprised to learn consuming caffeine can help reduce obesity?

How much caffeine do you consume each day?

It’s True – Using Birth Control Pills Could Make Your Brain Smaller

0
Birth Control

By: Annie Morgan

It’s estimated nearly 13 percent of women are currently on birth control.

Some women use it to avoid pregnancy while others use it to regulate their hormones – but a shocking new study shows yet another effect of being on the pill.

As it turns out, not only can birth control pills disrupt the body’s natural hormonal balance, but it can even impact the brain, and the way might surprise you.

Smaller Brains?

A tiny area of the brain called the hypothalamus controls the nervous and hormonal system.

In the past, not much research was done to see if birth control pills affect this area of the brain.

But with more women on the pill, researchers decided to see if there was any impact on the brain – and the results were shocking.

Medical News Today reported:

“For the study, the researchers recruited 50 women in good health, 21 of whom were taking birth control pills.

The team carried out MRI scans, which use radiology to generate images of organs, to look at the brain of each of the 50 women. They then used a validated methodology to gauge the hypothalamic volume

“We validated methods for assessing the volume of the hypothalamus and confirm, for the first time, that current oral contraceptive pill usage is associated with smaller hypothalamic volume,” says Lipton.

The researchers found that the women taking birth control pills had a significantly lower hypothalamus volume than those who were not using oral contraceptives.”

More studies are needed to expand further on what this means, but researchers believe it relates to a women’s mood regulation, which is influenced by hormones.

More Bad News

Since birth controls are synthetic, they disrupt the body in other ways.

And since they cause the hormones to fluctuate, many women report increased headaches and mood swings while on the pill.

From bursts of tears to up and down feelings – birth control pills can affect a women’s mood.

In fact, some women on the pill even find themselves in deep depression with suicidal thoughts.

Since every person is different, the reactions vary, but the risks must not be dismissed.

Do Your Research

Despite the troubling studies, many doctors still push the pill on patients.

And since many women don’t research the effects of birth control pills, they trust their doctor, not knowing the unintended consequences.

If you are considering taking birth control pills to regulate your hormones and periods – please make sure you take the time to research what you are putting in your body.

There are different kinds of pills, which all have different side effects.

And make sure to ask your doctor the tough questions!

These days in the medical world, we all have to be our own advocates.

Were you surprised to learn the results of the study – that women on the pill had a significantly smaller hypothalamus volume?

Do you agree birth control pills can have unintended consequences?

Tell us your thoughts in the comments below and be sure to share this article with your friends and family to let them know how birth control pills could make the brain smaller!

Heat Vs. Ice. Here’s How To Know Which One To Choose

0

By: Annie Morgan

When you are sore after a workout or have pain in your back or leg – do you reach for an ice pack or seek to use your heating pad?

While both heat and ice are used to treat pain in the body, they are not always interchangeable.

In fact, many people assume either heat or ice will work, but the truth is one is better than the other, depending on what you are trying to heal.

So before you reach for your heating pad or ice pack – check out the best uses for heat and ice.

When To Use Ice

Cold therapy is best to reduce inflammation and swelling, although there are still conflicting opinions on if this is always best.

Think of applying ice to a freshly injured area on the body.

For example, should you suspect you sprained your ankle, an icepack should be applied to your elevated ankle immediately.

Many people with nerve pain also find relief from cold therapy, as the cold can reduce the nerve activity temporarily, reports Healthline.

In fact, some people are so determined to find relief from the pain they are immersing their entire body in a cold chamber.

But if you feel stiff and tight – ice can make your injury worse.

Other medical conditions like diabetes can cause one to lose feeling in certain areas of the body, and applying ice might cause damage without being able to sense when it is too cold.

Of course, ice packs should never be applied directly to the skin as it could cause severe burns.

When To Use Heat

If your muscles are sore, you might find relief from either dry or moist heat.

After a workout, sitting in the sauna for a few minutes or taking a relaxing bath with Epsom salt could be the perfect remedy to soothe sore muscles.

The heat improves the blood flow to the targeted areas, which can cause your muscles to relax and become more flexible.

However, it’s important to avoid heat if you suspect you have a sprain or a swollen area.

If you have a fresh injury and apply heat – it’s bound to get worse and swell!

Other chronic medical conditions become exasperated with heat – so make sure you check with your doctor should you choose heat therapy.

Contrasting Therapy

Others find relief from using a combination of both hot and cold therapy.

Contrasting both heat and cold can help bring comfort to those who have chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Pain Science recommends the following protocol for applying hot and cold:

“about 2 minutes of heating: comfortably hot

about 1 minute of cooling: cool, not cold (unless you’re tough)

about 2 minutes of heating: hotter!

about 1 minute of cooling: colder!

about 2 minutes of heating: hot as you can handle

about 1 minute of cooling: cold as you can handle.”

Depending on what area of your body hurts, this method could be effective.

So next time you have an injury, make sure you avoid applying the wrong treatment.

Without even realizing it, you could end up making your pain worse.

When you are injured, do you typically reach for an ice pack or heating pad?

Were you surprised to learn there was a different use for each one?

Tell us your thoughts in the comments below and be sure to share this article with your friends and family to let them know how to choose between heat or ice when injured!

4 Ways To Find Relief From Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain

By: Annie Morgan

For those who struggle with chronic pain, any hope of relief seems impossible.

In fact, these people often feel pain from the moment they wake up – all throughout the day – and even in bed as they try to fall asleep at night.

But the good news is, while chronic pain isn’t necessarily curable, it is manageable.

And with a few tips, you can work in prevention to help find relief for the pain.

Cut Out All Sugar

Consuming sugar is never healthy for anyone, but for those with chronic pain, consuming sugar is like pouring gasoline on a fire.

It will make your pain worse, as the body will continue to become inflamed due to sugar.

If you’re serious about dealing with your pain – make it a priority to cut out sugar.

The last thing you want to do is add diabetes or obesity to your chronic pain.

See A Chiropractor And Massage Therapist Regularly

When the body is sore – everything hurts – from muscles down to the bones.

Having a chiropractic manipulation every 2-3 weeks (or more if you can afford it) can help put your bones back where they belong, and make sure everything is aligned properly.

Sometimes the neck out of place can cause radiating headaches.

And ladies – if you wear high heels on a regular basis – your hips can actually become out of alignment due to the position you force your body in!

A good chiropractor will also do some massage work and other types of therapeutic work such as acupuncture or dry needling to break up tough fascia.

Custom Fit To Your Need

Depending on where your pain is, you may need to get extra items to help manage your pain.

For headache sufferers especially, having the proper pillow that supports the neck is crucial.

Those with sore muscles would do well to have a foam roller and tennis ball on hand, to help break down knots and align the spine.

Other people need to bring special seating pillows with them when they travel, or braces for the wrist or ankle.

Having frozen ice packs ready when your body swells is another good tip to prepare for when the pain will ultimately come.

You’ve Got To Rest

If you are always on the go, saying yes to every activity and pulling all-nighters for work – you are literally killing your body.

Those with chronic pain simply can’t operate at 100 percent all of the time.

And if they try to and push their body too hard, the pain will get worse and they will end up crashing later.

Listen to your body.

As chronic pain sufferers know all too well, there are good days and bad days.

And on the bad days, it’s important to rest and take it easy.

Chronic pain is difficult to live with, but with a few daily disciplines, you can work to live a normal life.

Do you struggle with chronic pain?

If so, what have you done to help find relief?
