Treat Your Sunburn Naturally With These Household Methods

It happens to the best of us – we spend time outside in the summer sun enjoying the bliss of the summer heat… and it is only once the sun sets, we realize our skin not only has a “summer glow” but a sunburn too.

Sunburns can be painful! And many companies market chemically laced products they want you to buy to slather on your skin to make it “feel better.”

Not only are they dangerous, but they don’t work.

But fear not!

If you are looking for natural and effective ways to treat your sunburn at home (minus the toxic chemicals) – here are our top recommended picks.

Aloe Vera

Yes – a good old-fashioned Aloe plant is a natural way to treat sunburn.

Just break open the leaves and squeeze out the natural Aloe on your skin for instant relief. I have a few leaves I keep in the freezer just in case!

The cool Aloe on your skin will soothe your burn and help relieve the sting.

If you don’t have an Aloe plant, look for natural Aloe sold in stores – again just make sure it is pure Aloe – not the chemical lotions they sell “with Aloe.”

Cool Shower

There is nothing more painful than the feeling of hot water touching sunburned skin, ouch!

After all, your skin is not only burned, but inflamed.

But a cool shower or bath can help soothe your skin and provide instant relief.

Medicine Net also recommends adding 2 cups of baking soda to your bath which will help reduce the irritation and redness.

Other people have found relief by adding a few drops of lavender essential oil or dry oats to help calm the skin and soothe the sting.

Hopefully you aren’t using fragrance products anyways – but if you haven’t made the switch yet definitely avoid using them to cleanse your skin while it is burned! All the perfumes and chemicals will make your skin feel worse.

And as you dry off – gently dab your skin dry.

Tea Bags

When your skin feels hot, the last thing you want to think about is hot tea.

But brewing chamomile tea (and then letting it cool) is actually said to be a natural way to help soothe your scorched skin!

Healthline reports:

“Chamomile tea can be soothing to your spirit, but it can also soothe your sunburned skin. Brew the tea as you normally would and let it cool. When it’s ready, soak a washcloth in it and apply it to the affected area.

If you are allergic to pollen, you shouldn’t use this treatment. It may cause an allergic reaction in your skin.”

After The Burn

After the initial pain and redness has settled down, you’ll notice your skin will begin to peel.

Make sure to properly exfoliate in the shower and keep your skin moisturized.

Coconut or jojoba oil are natural moisturizers (without chemicals) you can start to apply to your skin to help bring your skin back to life.

If you have blisters, The American Academy of Dermatology points out you have second-degree burns, and you should not pop the blisters but let them heal naturally, as they are protecting your skin from infection.

And of course, make sure you stay hydrated and drink a lot of water!
