According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, more than 40 million adults struggle with anxiety.

And sadly, many anxious adults are so determined to “fix” their anxiety – they turn to medication to make them feel better.

But popping pills and becoming dependent on medication to feel good can make some people feel even worse – not to mention many people who struggle with anxiety don’t even need medication.

So before you reach for the bottle, check out some of our natural ways to help relieve anxiety and panic attacks.

Remember To Breathe

Sounds pretty basic, right?

But anxiety often causes increased heart rate and even dizziness due to excessive worry which can then lead to a panic attack.

Many times people are anxious because they think they are having a heart attack when it turns out their stress is what is causing their rapid heartbeat in the first place!

Simply taking a moment to stop and take 3 deep breaths can help calm the body down.

Deep breathing circulates oxygen throughout the body and helps improve the overall body.

And according to Harvard Health, deep adnominal breathing can even lower or stabilize blood pressure.

Get Moving

Yes, living an active lifestyle which includes exercise and stretching can help you reduce anxiety.

Working out releases endorphins which improve your overall mood.

And stretching exercises like Pilates help increase the oxygen flowing throughout your entire body.

Sometimes a simple walk or workout can cure anxiety and help stop a panic attack!

Natural Supplements

Many anxiety sufferers have found relief from natural supplements like GABA and B12.

In fact, Medical News Today reported a previous study found those with low blood levels of B-12 were more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety.

Chamomile has also been shown to help reduce anxiety – so if you seem to be anxious more so at night, a cup of chamomile tea might do the trick.

Others find relief from aromatherapy and find diffusing scents like lavender or peppermint help quiet their brain.

A note of caution – just because something is natural doesn’t mean it isn’t potent.

Make sure you know what you are doing, and seek the expertise of a medical professional if you have any questions on safely using alternative medicine.

Get Enough Sleep

Anxiety causes us to worry about things – and as is often the case the things we worry about don’t even end up happening!

Excessive worry can lead to insomnia and mind-racing, which could cause a vicious cycle of sleep deprivation and make anxiety even worse.

But getting a healthy dose of sleep can actually help you think clearer and make better decisions, leading to less anxiety.

You can even take the time to write out your anxious thoughts at night before you go to sleep so your brain can rest.

Don’t neglect self-care – an Epsom salt bath with lavender is almost an instant stress release.

Don’t Ignore Symptoms

Unchecked anxiety can cause serious health complications in the body and lead to everything from high blood pressure to heart problems.

Make sure you are taking your anxiety seriously before it escalates.

Some people truly do benefit from medication but consider natural remedies first before popping pills.

And of course, always make sure you discuss your psychological concerns with a trusted doctor to determine the best course of action for you.
