And while changing your diet, exercising and steering clear of toxic pollutants are a handful of things you can do to keep levels of chronic inflammation down, the truth is it’s still a problem for many people.

Which is why adding a therapeutic compound like lemon balm extract to your diet could help fight inflammation.

Studies like the one published in The Journal Toxicology and Industrial Health support lemon balm use for fighting inflammation.

In that study, researchers asked medical professionals who worked in the presence of harmful radiation, to take lemon balm daily in the form of a prepared tea.

For 30 days they drank tea with 1.5 grams of lemon balm in it. After the trial, the researchers rechecked their blood for the following; lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, catalase, superoxide dismutase, myeloperoxidase, and glutathione peroxidase activity.

They concluded that the lemon balm was responsible for helping increase the participants’ ability to fight inflammation and boosted their bodies’ levels of antioxidants.

They wrote:

“Use of Lemon balm infusion in radiology unit workers resulted in a significant improvement in plasma levels of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase and a marked reduction in plasma DNA damage, myeloperoxidase, and lipid peroxidation.

It is concluded that infusion of Lemon balm markedly improve oxidative stress condition and DNA damage in radiology staff when used as a dietary supplement for radiation protection.”

Several other published studies show the rosmarinic acid in lemon balm can help fight chronic inflammation, which is why including lemon balm in your diet is a great idea.

Here’s How Lemon Balm Can Help Protect Your Heart

Chronic inflammation is associated with many other health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, which is the #1 killer of people in the West.

Which is why taking lemon balm to help fight the formation of these diseases is a phenomenal idea.

Two of the most significant studies on lemon balm and heart health indicate lemon balm has the power to correct issues that could lead to cardiovascular disease.

One study The Journal of Ethnopharmacology published showed that when people who had known issues with heart arrhythmias took lemon balm, it helped correct the inconsistencies in their heartbeat.

By taking 1000 mg of lemon balm, daily, many of the research participants helped to reduce the number of palpitations they experienced daily.

A similar study published by the Journal Electronic Physician showed lemon balm helped regulate heartbeat and correct episodes of “early beat” or atypical fibrillations (abnormal heartbeat).

In this case, the study participants were rats, but the researchers noted that the more lemon balm the rats took, the better it was for their hearts.

In this instance, the subjects were divided into three groups.

A group that received saline only, one that received 100mg of lemon balm a day, and one that received 200 mg of lemon balm a day.

The rats who got the most lemon balm ended up seeing the most significant change in heart regulation.

Notes on Lemon Balm for Human Consumption

While lemon balm is safe to eat or drink, a lot of the research done on it has shown the higher the concentration of lemon balm a person takes, the better.

It’s for this reason many people take it in the form of an extract.

Extracts impart only the most nutritious part of lemon balm while leaving the extraneous plant material out.

Readily available at most health food stores, it can be expensive but works in amazing ways.
