Human beings have hair growing everywhere on our skin except for the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet. Much of this hair is so fine it is hard to see. Hairs, which are comprised of a protein called keratin, grow in hair follicles in the outer layer of skin. What we see as hair growth is actually the follicles producing new hair cells and propelling old cells through the surface of the skin at a rate of approximately six inches every year. The hair we wash, dry and style is a string of dead keratin cells. Most of us have 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on our heads, and we lose about 100 of them every day.
The life cycle of each follicle is influenced by age, disease, and a number of other factors. The life cycle of a human hair is divided into three phases:
Anagen — Active hair growth, lasting between two to six years.
Catagen — Transitional hair growth, lasting two to three weeks.
Telogen — Resting phase which lasts about two to three months. At the end of the resting phase the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it, then the growing cycle starts again.
The rate at which hair grows slows as we age.
A recent article in Life, Health and Food.com suggests you use a hair mask to boost the growth of your hair and to improve its condition, particularly if it is dry and damaged. The mask regulates excessive oil in the hair and makes the hair soft and shiny.
The primary ingredient of the mask is eggs, which are rich in fats and high quality protein. The second ingredient is potassium-rich bananas, which help seal cracks in the hair shaft. The third ingredient, beer, offers malt, yeast and hops, which contain the B vitamin group in large quantities. Beer also has potassium, iron, magnesium, copper and phosphorus, which support growth and strengthen the hair. The mask also contains honey, which is rich in vitamins C, K, E, B1, B2 and B6. Bananas are also great and help your hair a lot to fight the cracked parts. Your hair’s health condition is going to be significantly improved if you use eggs, honey, bananas and beer.
One egg (or only one egg yolk)
half a cup of dark beer
one tablespoon of honey
Put all the ingredients in a blender and mix to make the mask.
When the mask is done, apply it on your hair and then wrap it and keep it wrapped for about an hour or two.
Wash your hair as you normally do.
The article recommends you apply the mask weekly.
