With the cold winter air rolling in, many people are looking forward to hibernating indoors until springtime.
But the worst thing you can do for your health is to forgo all exercise during the cold months.
Not only will you start to pack on the pounds, but you’ll be tempted to indulge yourself in all types of “comfort” foods like sugar-filled hot chocolate and sweets.
While it might be too cold and icy to spend a lot of time outdoors – there are still ways you can stay active this winter season.
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Find A Hobby You Enjoy
There are plenty of ways to stay active indoors without having to brace the cold air.
From ice-skating to roller skating – to indoor tennis to swimming laps in an indoor pool – there are plenty of activities to keep your body moving during the cold!
You might want to consider purchasing a local gym membership during the winter months so you have access to their facilities.
Or, consider trying out a new hobby you’ve always wanted to but never found time for – like salsa dancing or martial arts.
It doesn’t feel like exercise if you are having fun!
Explore Outdoor Sports
If you’ve never been skiing or snowboarding, now might be the time to try something new!
Consider booking a weekend away with some friends at a resort where you can ski and get exercise – and then relax by the fireplace after.
Don’t worry if you aren’t a pro – there are always people willing to teach those who want to learn.
Who knows, you might just pick up a new hobby!
Shovel Snow
Nothing gets the heart pumping more than shoveling heavy and wet snow! You don’t even have to get in your car and drive to the gym – you just have to walk outside your home to get a good workout.
You’ll feel the burn in muscles you didn’t even know you had.
And if you’re feeling really ambitious and want to work your body even harder – you can volunteer to shovel snow for neighbors around you – not only will you gain friends – but you’ll get an incredible workout.
Keep Your Body Active
It’s hard to want to stay active during the winter months, but it is essential.
Health experts estimate the average person gains up to 7lbs in the winter.
And with the holidays and all the carb-filled cookies, breads, and creamy drinks – it can be hard to stay disciplined with your diet.
Do your best to still eat healthy, and make it a priority to keep your body active and moving during the winter.
The worst thing you can do for your health is become sedentary.
But don’t look at it as a stressful chore – think of it as a chance to explore a new hobby or learn something new!
