The word diet gets a bad rep, and deservedly so. Typical diets consist of unhealthy eating habits in an effort to shed unwanted pounds and alter the contour and shape of the body.

More often than not diets call for severe restrictions on caloric intake, and necessitate a reduction in the intake of many healthy nutrients your body needs for optimal health.

But then there are diets which are more like lifestyle choices.

Vegetarianism and Veganism are some of the more popular lifestyle eating choices.

One of the newest is the Paleo diet.

The Paleo diet is designed around what would have been our ancestors natural diet.

The assumption behind “Paleo” (as adherents refer to), is the advent of the agricultural revolution is what predicated many of the health problems we see in the world today.

Popularized by Dr Loren Cordain, the Paleo diet assumes that the natural diet of prehistoric peoples is what led to the evolution of our healthy, modern selves.

The claim is the natural, whole foods eaten by prehistoric man is what helped him grow a complex brain, while helping him to live a life of peak physical fitness.

Conversely it was the introduction of crops (like corn, grains, rice, beans) etc. that triggered what are known as the diseases of civilization.

And the penultimate idea behind Paleo is the consumption of pasture raised meats, organic fruits and veggies, along with seeds and nuts can help a person live a long and healthy life.

And the truth is there is an overwhelming amount of empirical and anecdotal evidence to support these statements.

The reason these food types are so helpful for optimum health is because these foodstuffs are helpful in reducing inflammation in the body.

It is know inflammation is what produces many of the modern diseases that affect Westerners.

The following conditions have a close association with inflammation:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Parksinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimers
  • IBS
  • Leaky Gut
  • Neuropathy
  • Diabetes

And many, many more could be added to that list.

The beauty of the paleo diet is it allows the body to operate as it was truly designed and fight inflammation.

You see, the body is best fueled when it uses fat as its primary source of energy. Despite what popular dietary practices might espouse, a ketogenic (fat only) diet is what helps you maintain your best health.

Not just any fat, but the kinds that caveman would have eaten. When fat is substituted for carbs it normalizes insulin sensitivity     (a huge factor in many disease types) and helps the body resist inflammation.

And that’s just a sampling of the health benefits.

As not all fat is equal those who practice paleo depend on the cleanest and most “energetic” fats.

One of these is Coconut oil.
