Having beautiful skin isn’t just about protecting yourself from the sun, or applying moisturizer. Beautiful skin begins with what you put into your body. To achieve the healthy, supple skin you want, begin with hydration, nutrition, and detoxification. Here are six steps to follow for radiant, glowing skin:

1. Drink plenty of water.

Water is the element critical to life. Dehydrated skin looks older, and it often appears dry and flaky. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to eat foods high in water content, like leafy greens, ripe tomatoes, watermelon, and broth-based soups.

2. Drink your lemons.

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Lemons’ high fiber content helps to cleanse your digestive system and boosts immunity. Begin your day by squeezing the juice of a fresh lemon into a jar ful of filtered water. Leave it out on your counter, and when you pass by, take a big sip. Add it to your water bottle and carry it with you during your daily activities.

3. Get your greens.

A salad every day is a great way to maximize nutrition, but on days you just don’t feel like eating a salad, drink a smoothie instead. Blend kale or spinach with a little fruit, and remember to include avocado, for healthy fats.

4. Soothe with aloe.

Aloe Vera benefits us inside and outside. Apply it to sooth irritated or sunburned skin. Add the gel to your smoothie.

5. Mind your mantras.

Your attitude and your confidence are reflected in your outer appearance. Take a moment and look into your mirror, deeply into your own eyes, and say, “I am beautiful. I am kind. Divine love is shining through my face.” Your forehead will relax and your smile will curl up.

6. Make friends with turmeric.

Turmeric is a magic spice, known around the world for detoxification. Take it as a supplement morning and night to reduce inflammation, and add it to green smoothies, scrambled eggs, and salad dressing. You can even make a facial mask to soften skin, reduce swelling, and clear up acne. Here’s the recipe:

Mix 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 2 teaspoons rice flour (for oily skin) or finely ground oats (for dry or mature skin) and 3 tablespoons plain yogurt (or milk, cream, or sour cream).
Spread the mixture all over your clean face, and then let it dry.
Wait 15-20 minutes, then rinse it off.
Apply once a week.
